The Production of Plastic and Its Important Raw Materials Inside
Plastic contains many organic compounds including carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, and coal. The main raw material is petroleum.
So what is the journey of petroleum turning into plastic?
Various distillation processes are carried out in petroleum refineries. During the distillation process, fractionation is also carried out. Fractionation (chemical separation) aims to further separate plastic into lighter groups.
In fractionation, naphtha (a product between gasoline and kerosene obtained by distillation of petroleum between 100 and 250 degrees Celsius) is obtained. The obtained naphtha is extremely important in this production. Polymerization and polycondensation (the process of combining small molecules into large molecules called polymers) are carried out in plastic production. In this way, plastic production is completed with two main processes. Production variety differs depending on the structure of the plastic.
